Abstract Aim : To assess the surface topography and chemical composition of three brands of as-received mini-implants (SIN(r), Morelli(r), and Conexao(r)). Methods: Twelve mini-implants of each brand were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Results: There was no significant differences among SIN(r), Morelli(r), and Conexao(r) mini-implants comparing their surface topography by visualization of SEM micrographs and analysis of scores. The EDX analysis showed statistically significant difference among them for the amount of Ti, Al and V. Miniimplants SIN(r)presented also N and O in their composition. Conclusions: In conclusion, the miniimplants Morelli(r), SIN(r) and Conexao(r) presented Ti as main component of the alloy. Remaining components, such as Al and V, were also observed in all the analyzed brands, with differences among them. Only SIN(r)mini-implants presented N and O. As far as surface topography is concerned, there are no differences among the three brands of mini-implants.

INTRODUÇÃO: o Método de Elementos Finitos (MEF) é um recurso da Engenharia empregado para calcular o estresse e a deformação de estruturas complexas, e tem sido amplamente utilizado nas pesquisas em Ortodontia. Apresenta a vantagem de ser um método não-invasivo e preciso, que fornece dados quantitativos e detalhados acerca das reações fisiológicas que podem ocorrer nos tecidos. OBJETIVO: esse artigo pretende realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre as etapas para realização do Método de Elementos Finitos, bem como de sua aplicabilidade na Ortodontia. RESULTADOS: o MEF é capaz de avaliar a distribuição do estresse na interface entre o ligamento periodontal e o osso alveolar, bem como a tendência de deslocamento em diversos tipos de movimentos dentários, quando utilizados diferentes tipos de aparelhos. Para tanto, é necessário conhecimento de softwares específicos para esse fim. CONCLUSÕES: o MEF é um importante método experimental que pode esclarecer questionamentos acerca da movimentação dentária, superando as desvantagens de outros métodos experimentais.

INTRODUCTION: The finite element method (FEM) is an engineering resource applied to calculate the stress and deformation of complex structures, and has been widely used in orthodontic research. With the advantage of being a non-invasive and accurate method that provides quantitative and detailed data on the physiological reactions possible to occur in tissues, applying the FEM can anticipate the visualization of these tissue responses through the observation of areas of stress created from applied orthodontic mechanics. OBJECTIVE: This article aims at reviewing and discussing the stages of the finite element method application and its applicability in Orthodontics. RESULTS: FEM is able to evaluate the stress distribution at the interface between periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, and the shifting trend in various types of tooth movement when using different types of orthodontic devices. Therefore, it is necessary to know specific software for this purpose. CONCLUSIONS: FEM is an important experimental method to answer questions about tooth movement, overcoming the disadvantages of other experimental methods.

This study aims at comparing conventional and nickel-free metal bracket surface characteristics with elemental composition by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The sample consisted of 40 lower incisor brackets divided into four groups: ABZ = conventional brackets, Kirium Abzil 3M® (n = 10); RL = conventional brackets, Roth Light Morelli® (n = 10); NF = nickel-free brackets, Nickel-Free Morelli® (n = 10); and RM = nickel-free brackets, Roth Max Morelli® (n = 10). Qualitative evaluation of the bracket surface was performed using SEM, whereby surface features were described and compared. The elemental composition was analyzed by EDS. According to surface analysis,groups ABZ and RL showed a homogeneous surface, with better finishing, whereas the surfaces in groups NF and RM were rougher. The chemical components with the highest percentage were Fe, Cr and C. Groups NF and MR showed no nickel in their composition. In conclusion, the bracket surface of the ABZ and RL groups was more homogeneous, with grooves and pores, whereas the surfaces in groups NF and RM showed numerous flaws, cracks, pores and grooves. The chemical composition analysis confirmed that the nickel-free brackets had no Ni in their composition, as confirmed by the manufacturer’s specifications, and were therefore safe to use in patients with a medical history of allergy to this metal.

This study analyzed occlusal radiographs to compare the transverse changes produced in patients treated with rapid maxillary expansion using two types of appliances. The sample consisted of 31 children aged 7 to 10.6 years, of both genders, with posterior cross-bite. Fifteen children were treated with a tooth-borne expander and 16 were treated with a tooth-tissue-borne expander. Occlusal radiographs obtained at treatment onset and at the end of the retention period were digitized. The following variables were measured: intermolar distance (IMD), interapical distance (IApD), interbase distance (IBaD) and interarm distance (IArD). The results revealed increases in all measurements in both groups after rapid maxillary expansion. Comparison between groups revealed that the increases were greater in patients treated with the tooth-borne expander, except for the IArD measurement, which presented the same increase in both groups. Even though the IMD measurements differed between expanders, they were proportional to the activation of the appliances (IBaD). The increase in the IApD measurement was proportionally greater in the group treated with the tooth-borne expander (0.7:1.0) than in that treated with the tooth-tissue-borne expander (0.4:1.0). It was concluded that both appliances had similar effects, although the tooth-tissue-borne expander produced a lesser opening at the apical region of the incisors.

Este artigo demonstra, por meio de 2 casos clínicos, como a Ortodontia pode representar uma excelente ferramenta para auxiliar no aumento do contorno dos lábios, tornando a abordagem multidisciplinar uma estratégia mais efetiva na conquista de bons resultados clínicos

In recent years, facial esthetics excellence has become a major focus in health professional offices and for the public worldwide. Among the main concerns of the patients is lip augmentation, since it has been associated with beauty and youth. This procedure has been increasingly performed and studied by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Although good outcomes for lip augmentation have been achieved with different techniques, literature shows several complications and collateral effects. This paper demonstrates, through two clinical cases, how Orthodontics may be an excellent tool to assist in lip augmentation, highlighting the need for an interdisciplinary approach to enhance a more effective strategy to achieve facial esthetics goals

OBJETIVO: avaliar o sistema de forças gerado pela mola T centralizada no espaço interbraquete, com pré-ativação preconizada por Burstone. MÉTODOS: utilizando-se modelos fotoelásticos, a mola T com pré-ativações preconizadas por Burstone, confeccionada com fio retangular de titânio-molibdênio (TMA) de secção 0,017"x 0,025", centralizada e com ativação de 6mm, 3mm e em posição neutra. Para melhor confiabilidade dos resultados, os testes foram repetidos em três modelos igualmente duplicados e confeccionados pelo mesmo operador. Utilizou-se uma distância interbraquetes de 27mm. Para compreensão dos resultados, as franjas foram visualizadas através do polariscópio, fotografadas e analisadas qualitativamente. RESULTADOS: por meio da análise qualitativa da ordem de franjas no modelo fotoelástico, notou-se que, nas extremidades de retração e ancoragem, ambas apresentaram simetria no sistema de força, em toda extensão radicular.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the force system generated by T-springs placed in the center of the interbracket space using the pre-activations advocated by Burstone. METHODS: Photoelastic models were used to assess T-springs fabricated with 0.017x0.025-in rectangular titanium-molybdenum alloy wire (TMA), centrally positioned, with 6.0 mm activation, 3 mm activation, and in neutral position. To ensure reliable results, tests were repeated on three photoelastic models equally duplicated and fabricated by the same operator. An interbracket distance of 27.0 mm was used. For a better understanding of the results, the fringes were viewed in a polariscope, then photographed and qualitatively analyzed. RESULTS: Through qualitative analysis of the fringe order in the photoelastic model it was noted that both the retraction and anchorage ends displayed force system symmetry across the full extent of the root.

OBJETIVO: avaliar o sistema de forças gerado pela mola T utilizada para fechamento de espaços. MÉTODOS: por meio do método experimental fotoelástico, avaliou-se a mola T utilizada no fechamento de espaços com duas variações de pré-ativação em sua porção apical, sendo uma com 30º e a outra com 45º. As molas foram confeccionadas com fio retangular de titânio-molibdênio (TMA) de secção 0,017" x 0,025", centralizadas no espaço interbraquetes de 27mm e ativadas em 5,0mm, 2,5mm e posição neutra. Para melhor confiabilidade dos resultados, os testes foram repetidos em três modelos fotoelásticos igualmente reproduzidos e confeccionados pelo mesmo operador. Para compreensão dos resultados, as franjas fotoelásticas visualizadas no polariscópio foram fotografadas e analisadas qualitativamente. RESULTADOS: por meio da análise qualitativa da ordem de franjas no modelo fotoelástico, notou-se que, nas extremidades de retração e ancoragem, a mola T com 30º de ativação apical apresentou um acúmulo de energia discretamente maior para o sistema de forças liberado.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the force system produced by the T-spring used for space closure. METHODS: By means of the experimental photoelastic method, we evaluated the T-spring-used for space closure-with two different preactivations on its apical portion, i.e., one with 30° and one with 45º. The springs were fabricated with rectangular 0.017 X 0.025-in titanium-molybdenum alloy (TMA), centered in a 27.0 mm interbracket space and activated at 5.0 mm and 2.5 mm, and in a neutral position. For more reliable results, tests were repeated on three photoelastic models duplicated and prepared by the same operator. To better understand the results, the fringes seen in the polariscope were photographed and analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS: Through qualitative analysis of the fringe order in the photoelastic model it was noted that at the retraction and anchoring ends the T-spring with 30° apical activation showed a slightly greater accumulation of energy relative to the force system that was generated.

Pela sua característica essencialmente estética, o aparelho lingual vem despertando interesse por parte dos ortodontistas e da comunidade em geral. O crescente mercado dos serviços de beleza, em todos os setores (médicos, odontológicos, cosméticos), influencia o ressurgimento da técnica lingual. Biomecanicamente diferente da técnica convencional, a técnica lingual necessita de um conhecimento e treinamento diferenciado do profissional que a executa. Verificar as diferenças, encontradas na literatura, com relação às duas técnicas é o objetivo deste trabalho, como parte do processo de amadurecimento e treinamento profissional confirmando a técnica lingual como mais uma opção segura de tratamento ortodôntico.

Considering the lingual braces essentially esthetic they are bring up the interest of orthodontists and the general population. The increasing of the beauty services in several segments (medicine, dentistry, cosmetics etc) it is affecting the reappear of lingual technique. Due its mechanical differences comparing with buccal technique, the lingual approach demand to the orthodontist a special knowledge and training. The objective of this paper is review the literature and describes the main differences between the two techniques in order to contribute to the improvement of the orthodontists and help them to make the lingual philosophy a safe option of orthodontic treatment too.

OBJETIVO: avaliar as diferenças produzidas nas dimensões e forma de arco pelos tratamentos com aparelho expansor fixo tipo Hyrax e aparelho expansor removível tipo Placa de Hawley com parafuso expansor palatino centralizado. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: foram selecionados modelos de estudo iniciais e finais de 31 crianças portadoras de mordida cruzada posterior, de ambos os gêneros, de origem étnica diversa e na fase da dentadura mista, tratadas nos cursos de Graduação e Pós-Graduação em Ortodontia do Departamento de Clínica Infantil da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araraquara - UNESP. Destas crianças, 15 foram tratadas com uso do aparelho expansor fixo tipo Hyrax e as demais 16 crianças foram tratados com expansão rápida da maxila efetuada com o aparelho expansor fixo. Foram realizadas medidas das distâncias intercaninos e intermolares, da inclinação do processo alveolar e inclinação dentária nas imagens escaneadas do arco superior e do contorno do palato, obtido com auxílio de um template ajustável e do programa de análises Radiocef Studio. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: os resultados indicam uma mudança significante nas distâncias intercaninos e intermolares em ambos os grupos e uma inclinação dentária e do processo alveolar para vestibular significante no grupo tratado com o aparelho expansor fixo. A expansão conseguida pelo aparelho expansor fixo foi aproximadamente o dobro da promovida pelo aparelho expansor removível.

AIM: to evaluate the differences of arch dimension and arch form obtained by treating the posterior cross-bite with the fixed expander appliance Hyrax and with the removable expander type Hawley plate with centralized screw. METHODS: initial and final study models of thirty-one children in the mixed dentition phase, of both genders and same ethnic origin treated in the Araraquara School of Dentistry, UNESP, São Paulo, Brazil - undergraduate and graduation Orthodontic courses. Fifteen children were treated with a removable expander appliance and sixteen with the fixed expander appliance, rapid palatal expansion. Measurements of inter canine and inter molar distances, palatal and dental inclination, were taken using the images of the upper arch and the palatal contour with the aid of an adjustable template and Radiocef analyzing program. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: the results indicated a significant increase in the inter canines and inter molars distances in both groups, significant inclination of teeth and alveolar process toward buccal direction in the group treated with the fixed expander appliance. The expansion obtained when using the fixed expander appliance was about the double of the expansion obtained with the removable expander appliance.

OBJETIVOS: julgamento descritivo dos efeitos do bionator no tratamento da má oclusão Classe II, divisão 1, quando está presente uma retrusão mandibular ou uma deficiência do crescimento mandibular. METODOLOGIA: são apresentados os resultados do tratamento em três pacientes que foram acompanhados sem tratamento por um período de um ano e, posteriormente, tratados com o bionator por um período de dois anos. Em todos os pacientes foram inseridos implantes metálicos que serviram como referência para as sobreposições dos traçados cefalométricos que, em conjunto com algumas medidas cefalométricas tradicionais, geraram dados para a avaliação do efeito ortopédico e ortodôntico do tratamento da má oclusão Classe II com este aparelho. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: foi observada uma restrição do crescimento da maxila e um estímulo do crescimento da mandíbula, assim como alteração na direção do crescimento condilar. Foi também observada uma verticalização dos incisivos superiores e, no arco inferior, aumento na tendência natural de vestibularização dos incisivos inferiores.

AIM: to evaluate the bionator treatment effect on Class II, division 1, malocclusion, presenting mandibular retrusion or mandibular length deficiency. METHODS: it is described the effects of the treatment in three patients that were accompanied with no treatment for one year and them were treated for two years with bionator. In all three patients metallic implants were inserted to serve as reference to cephalometric tracing superimposition that, together with some traditional cephalometric measurements, generated data to the evaluation of the orthopedic and orthodontic effects of Class II malocclusion treatment with this appliance. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: it was observed a maxillary growth restriction and a stimulus of mandibular growth as well as a change in the direction of condylar growth. There was also an uprighting of the upper incisors and in the lower arch Balters bionator increased the natural tendency of buccal movement of the incisors.

OBJETIVO: na presente pesquisa utilizou-se o aparelho Hyrax tendo como objetivo avaliar as alterações transversais e verticais da maxila. Foram selecionados 20 pacientes de ambos os gêneros, entre 7 e 11 anos de idade, que apresentavam mordida cruzada posterior uni ou bilateral. METODOLOGIA: foram realizadas telerradiografias em norma frontal (PA) antes e após a expansão. A fim de evitar que a falta de padronização dessas radiografias pudesse influenciar nos resultados, idealizou-se um método de padronização para tais radiografias. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: os resultados mostraram que a correção da mordida cruzada posterior com o aparelho Hyrax, que ocorreu em todos os casos, foi em função tanto da abertura da sutura palatina mediana como também da inclinação dos molares. A medida JgE-JgD relacionada com a expansão maxilar aumentou significantemente em todos os casos tratados. Nas avaliações dentárias, as medidas verticais não apresentaram diferenças significantes, ao contrário das medidas transversais (FTE-FTD; FBE-FBD; LO.BTE; LO.BTD; BTE.BTD). A largura da cavidade nasal também aumentou significantemente (CNE-CND). O método de padronização proposto permite, portanto, utilizar as medidas que avaliam a expansão rápida da maxila, através das radiografias póstero-anteriores, com segurança, também no sentido vertical.

AIM: in the atresia maxillary cases, the most indicated treatment is rapid maxillary expansion that can be achieved by different therapies. In the present research the Hyrax appliance was used in order to evaluate the transverse and vertical outcomes in maxillary base. METHODS: twenty patients of both gender, from 7 to 11 years old, presenting uni or bilateral posterior crossbite were selected. Posteroanterior radiographs were performed before and after expansion. These radiographs were standardized in order to avoid that problems with lack of standardization influence the results. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: the obtained data showed that the posterior crossbite correction with Hyrax appliance, observed in all the cases, was consequent either to midpalatal suture opening or to molar tipping. JgE-JgD Measurement related to maxillary expansion increased significantly in all the treated cases. According to dental evaluation, vertical measurements did not show significant differences, which is in opposition to the transverse measurements (FTE-FTD; FBE-FBD; LO.BTE; LO.BTD; BTE.BTD). The nasal cavity width also increased significantly (CNE-CND). The standardization method proposed seemed to be reliably useful for maxilla rapid expansion evaluation with posteroanterior radiographs principally for vertical considerations.
